Commercial refrigeration

Commercial HVAC on this coast is mostly two arguments: a rooftop unit that has been patched one winter too many, and a building that was never balanced properly to begin with. We service what is there, tell you plainly when a repair is good money after bad, and size a replacement from the building rather than from the plate on the old unit.

Before we quote a replacement

Three things we want to know, and none of them is your budget.

01 What is on the roof now Make, model, age, and whether the heat comes from a gas section or from electricity. Then what has been repaired lately, because three service calls in two winters is an argument on its own.
02 How the building actually runs Opening hours, the corner that never warms up, the room that cooks in July, and what the controls are set to versus what somebody set them to in 2019.
03 What the programs need first If a rebate is in play, the paperwork order matters more than the equipment order. Pre-approval before work starts, and an invoice date that falls inside the program window.

Money for replacing a gas rooftop unit

Two live programs, one paused set, and the official page for each of them.

FortisBC, gas customers up to $225,000

Dual fuel rooftop units: 30% of total project cost, up to $150,000 per premise for a standard efficiency unit and up to $225,000 for a condensing one, on invoices dated on or after July 4, 2025. It has to replace gas as the primary heat. FortisBC also requires the unit to be installed by a contractor licensed with Technical Safety BC, found through its Trade Ally Network. That is the program's condition on whoever does the work, so ask any contractor quoting it, us included, where they stand against it.

BC Hydro, electricity customers 30% bonus

Business energy-saving incentives cover one-for-one replacements and add-on upgrades for HVAC and refrigeration, with a bonus on projects submitted between June 3, 2025 and February 11, 2027 and completed by March 14, 2028. Pre-approval happens in BC Hydro's CEM Hub before work starts, and the application is completed by a contractor in its Alliance of Energy Professionals.

Rebate pages move, and a number that was right last spring can be wrong now. We re-read the official page before a figure goes on a quote, and if the program has changed you hear the new number rather than the one that was convenient. Ask what your building qualifies for and you get the answer with the date attached.

Air that reaches the far end

A rooftop unit can be in perfect health while the back of the shop stays cold and the front door blows warm. Most of the time the fault is not the machine. It is a duct run that was never balanced, a return that got boxed in during a renovation, or a control sequence nobody has looked at since the building changed hands.

That is a cheaper problem than a new unit, and it is worth ruling out before anyone sells you one.

Do you service rooftop units?

Yes. Packaged rooftop units are most of the commercial HVAC we touch: the heating section, the cooling section, economisers, belts, filters, controls, and the condensate drain that floods a ceiling tile the week nobody is watching it.

Is there a rebate to replace a gas rooftop unit?

There is, for FortisBC gas customers. FortisBC pays 30% of total project cost on a dual fuel rooftop unit, up to $150,000 per premise for standard efficiency and up to $225,000 for condensing, on invoices dated on or after July 4, 2025. The new unit has to replace gas as the building's primary heat, and FortisBC requires the unit to be installed by a contractor licensed with Technical Safety BC, found through its Trade Ally Network. Those are the program's conditions rather than a statement about any one company, so ask us where we stand against them, and ask anyone else quoting the same job. We re-read it before a rebate goes on a quote.

Can you put our building on a maintenance plan?

Yes, and it is usually the same plan that covers your refrigeration. One visit schedule, one record of readings, one number to call when something stops.

Is a commercial heat pump worth it in a building like ours?

It depends on what heats the building today and what the electrical service can carry. A mild coastal winter is the easy case for a heat pump, but a building with an ageing gas rooftop unit and a live rebate is a different calculation from one on electric heat with nothing on the table. We will do that arithmetic with you before anyone quotes equipment.
