- Trane's installer guide asks for its Seacoast Kit on any unit put in within one mile of salt water, unless the model already carries the factory salt shields. - Coil and fin choice
- Inside its closest band, Carrier's own selection guide rates plain aluminium-fin copper-tube coils, microchannel and pre-coated aluminium fin as not recommended, and rates copper fin and the E-coated options as acceptable. That choice is made once, at order time, and it is the difference between a coil that lasts and a warranty argument in five years.
- What the warranty says
- Trane's owner's guide excludes damage from a corrosive atmosphere, then covers the indoor and outdoor coils only where a Sea Coast Kit is fitted. That clause settles the cost of a replacement coil, so it is worth reading before the install rather than after a failure.
- Washing the outdoor unit
- Mitsubishi Electric's manual says to clean the unit with water regularly to remove salt build-up. No manufacturer we have read sets an interval, so we will not invent one. We show you how it is done and tell you what the coil looked like on the last visit.
- Defrost, through a mild wet winter
- The January design temperature for Ucluelet is -2 °C and the town is built for 3,200 millimetres of precipitation a year. That is where an outdoor coil spends its winter: near freezing, in wet air, defrosting often. We check the defrost termination, the pan drain and the clearance under the unit, because a blocked drain turns a working defrost into a block of ice.
