HVAC is a wide word. On this coast it is usually one of four calls: a rooftop unit over a shop that has stopped heating, a heat pump that ices up and stays iced, a furnace that will not light on the first cold morning, or a system that still runs and costs more to run every year. We take all four.

We are a refrigeration shop as well as a heating contractor, and that combination decides a lot of what we do. A restaurant can put its rooftop unit and its walk-in cooler on the same visit. How an HVAC repair call runs

Three steps, and the first one happens on the phone before anybody drives out.

01 You tell us what it is doing The make and model off the data plate, the symptom, and roughly when it started. A good half of the diagnosis is in that description, and it decides what goes on the van before anyone drives out.
02 The equipment gets read, then priced Pressures, temperatures, airflow and amp draw, taken off the machine and compared against what the machine is supposed to do. You hear what we found in plain words before a part is ordered.
03 A repair, or the case for replacing Most faults are a repair and we will say so. Where replacing is the better buy you get the arithmetic behind it, and any rebate in the calculation is re-read off the official page the day it goes on the quote.

What a contractor should be able to show you

Any shop can tell you a system needs replacing. Fewer will show you the readings that took them there: suction and head pressure, superheat and subcooling, the temperature split across the coil, the amp draw on the compressor. Those numbers are how a worn part gets told apart from a worn-out machine.

So ask for them. Ask what the fault is, what the part costs, and what the same money buys towards a replacement instead. A vague answer to any of those is worth knowing about before you sign anything.

Questions about HVAC repair

What does an HVAC contractor actually cover?

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning, which on this coast means furnaces, heat pumps, ductless systems, rooftop units, ductwork and the controls that run all of it. We are a commercial refrigeration shop as well, so a building with a walk-in cooler and a rooftop unit gets one contractor for both rather than two.

Do you do emergency HVAC repair?

Phone the shop on 250-797-2829 and tell us what the equipment is doing. Commercial refrigeration is answered around the clock. Heating and cooling reach the same number and the same shop, and a breakdown is always better handled on the phone than through a form, because the questions we need to ask depend on your answers.

Do you repair heat pumps, or only install them?

Both, on any make. Plenty of what looks terminal on a heat pump turns out to be a repair: a failed defrost sensor, a capacitor, a contactor, a blocked outdoor coil, or a refrigerant leak that has to be found and fixed rather than topped up. Ductless air conditioning repair is the same unit in July, running the other way. Put the model and serial numbers off the data plate in the contact form, or call the shop.

What should I ask an HVAC repair company before booking?

What the fault is and how they found it. What the part costs and what the visit covers. Whether the technician is Red Seal certified. Who files the rebate paperwork if a replacement comes up, and when they last read the rebate page they are quoting from. Any HVAC contractor worth booking will answer every one of those without hesitating.

Can one visit cover the heating and the refrigeration?

Yes, and in a restaurant or a grocery it usually should. The rooftop unit and the walk-in are the same trade underneath, so putting them on one schedule means one set of readings, one record and one number to call. That is what the maintenance plans are for.
