Heat pumps, furnaces and refrigeration in Port Alberni
Homes here heat with gas or electricity, the kitchens in town all run refrigeration, and we come up Highway 4 for both.
Two kinds of house in the Alberni Valley
Piped gas on one street and electric heat on the next, and the two are different jobs.
Port Alberni has a gas main under it and the rest of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District does not. FortisBC's 4,055 residential connections in the district are all inside this town. A furnace here is still a furnace, worth servicing on its own merits before anyone talks you into replacing it.
Away from that main the houses run on electricity, and both kinds share a summer the coast never sees. The building code puts the July design temperature at 31 °C and the January one at −5 °C. That pair is the reason a heat pump in the Valley is bought for two seasons rather than one.
Commercial work runs alongside all of that, all year: the walk-in, the prep line, the ice machine, and the rooftop equipment above the lot. Ask what we found and you get the readings. Ask when we can be there and you get an honest answer about the day and the road, rather than a window we cannot hold.
Furnace repair, heat pumps, and which rebate applies
The fuel a Port Alberni home burns today is what decides the rebate, long before anyone picks the equipment.
Gas-heated home
We service the furnace you already own rather than sell against it. The flame sensor, the igniter, the limit switch, the blower and the flue, with the readings taken at the unit instead of guessed at from the hallway.
On rebates the answer is no, and it is better said early. The only provincial programme that reaches a home heated by natural gas, oil or propane is the income-qualified one, and it runs on its own contractor registration.
That does not settle whether a heat pump belongs here. In a town with a 31 °C July it often does, on the cooling and the running cost. We will price it on those, and say so.
Electric-heated home
Baseboards or an electric furnace is the straightforward case. That puts the Home Renovation Rebate in play, worth up to $4,000 on a heat pump carrying the whole house and $1,500 on one carrying part of it.
BC Hydro is topping that up by as much as $1,000 for work paid between August 1 and October 31, 2026, with the finished application in by November 30, 2026. Funding runs out rather than winding down, so those two dates decide it.
A house on wood heat runs down the same track. Both need the heat pump installed by a contractor registered with the program. Griffin Refrigeration is not registered with CleanBC Better Homes, so neither is available on a heat pump we install today, and we quote the work without them.

Port Alberni holds 66 active liquor licences, and 52 of them are food and drink rooms: 33 Food Primary and 19 Liquor Primary. Behind each of those rooms is refrigeration that cannot be allowed to drift, and heating and cooling in the same building. Forty-three kilometres, and one highway
Port Alberni is 43.5 km from Qualicum Beach and the route is Highway 4 the whole way. That road has a record: the Cameron Bluffs fire closed it on June 6, 2023, it did not reopen until June 23, it ran single lane until August 31, and there have been shorter closures for debris and repairs after that. So we plan Valley work instead of promising it, and we tell you what the road is doing when you call.
