The federal Greener Homes loan is closed
Natural Resources Canada is not approving new loan applications, the grant closed before it, and provincial money is what is left.

"Funding for the Canada Greener Homes Loan is now fully committed. New loan applications cannot be approved." The same page adds that this does not affect homeowners who already have an approved loan, and that approved loan funding remains available.
Canada Greener Homes Grant
Closed, and December 31, 2025 was the last day for existing applicants to submit documents. There is no route back into it, and no BC program has replaced it one for one.
Oil to Heat Pump Affordability
The federal page states that July 31, 2026 was the last day to apply for applicants in Alberta, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and tells residents of British Columbia to use their provincial program instead. We are not going to tell you it is closed here.
Oil heat is where the bad advice lives
Heating oil is still common on this coast, and the federal oil program is the one that gets quoted wrongly most often, in both directions. Its page is written for five provinces and territories, and it points British Columbians somewhere else. That is all it says, so that is all we will say.
What we can tell you is what the province has for an oil-heated house on the Island. If the household is income-qualified, that is the CleanBC Energy Savings Program, which needs a contractor registered for it. If the address is in a Regional District of Nanaimo Electoral Area, it is the RDN's $2,000. If neither fits, there is no provincial rebate for the switch, and it is better to hear that before you plan a budget around one.
What is still open on the Island
Three routes, all provincial or regional.
- If the house is heated by electricity $4,000 Home Renovation Rebate, whole-home heat pump, at any income. $1,500 for a partial system, plus a bonus of up to $1,000 on work completed, invoiced and paid by October 31, 2026, with the application in by November 30, 2026.
- If the household is income-qualified $16,500 CleanBC Energy Savings Program maximum, for a combined space and water heat pump replacing fossil heat at income Level 1. Space heating alone, on a central ducted or three-head system, is $13,000. Either needs a contractor registered for that program.
- If the address is in an RDN Electoral Area $2,000 Regional District of Nanaimo, for a house coming off natural gas, oil or propane. Town addresses do not qualify.
Federal money has not vanished from BC entirely. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program is delivered here through BC Hydro and FortisBC, as free direct-install upgrades for lower and median-income households, which on this side of the province is the Energy Conservation Assistance Program. You apply to the utility, not to Ottawa.
The three routes above all need the heat pump installed by a contractor registered with the program. Griffin Refrigeration is not registered with CleanBC Better Homes, so none of them is available on a heat pump we install today.
